For This Veteran Spouse, Waiting Was Always Worth It

Maronica's Name PlateAt National Vision, every Retail Support Center Associate who has answered the call to duty, either as a service member or as their spouse, has a special sticker on their name plate. This sticker, identifying them as a veteran or veteran spouse, serves as a daily reminder of the many sacrifices made for our country.

Time away from loved ones, countless moves and daily uncertainty are just some of the ‘constants’ of military life that Associate Maronica Dewar knows all too well. Director of our Managed Care Operations and Network Operations, Maronica is one of several veteran spouses whose name plate sticker comes with stories of her time as a military spouse.

Military Life

When Maronica met her husband, Brian, in the 7th grade she had no idea where life would take her. As an infantryman, Brian would serve both domestically and abroad in places like New York, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Korea, Egypt and Kuwait.

Maronica always stayed stateside to raise their children and recalls that the worse part, “was waiting; however, the best part was having someone worth waiting for.”

A Diverse Background

In 2010, Brian retired as a Staff Sergeant after 20 years of service in the Army. Despite countless moves, Maronica has enjoyed a successful career in the healthcare managed care revenue field. She spent 20 years working in various management positions for North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems (now Northwell) where she managed 15 of their facility’s managed care operations.

Maronica also worked for Hill-Rom in Charleston, SC for 6 years where she led a team of over 100 employees and handled all of their managed care contracts, billing, cash posting, and was their Revenue Cycle Escalation Committee President and Chief Compliance Officer.

After Brian’s retirement, Maronica and her family relocated to Georgia. She was able to continue her career in the managed care field by managing operations for 25 urgent care and primary care facilities throughout the southeast.

Maronica and her husband

Maronica joined the National Vision family in January 2017. As the Director of the Managed Care Operations and Network Operations Department, she is responsible for the day-to-day revenue operations that supports our five brands and over 1,000 stores. She not only brings years of professional experience, but her time as a military spouse proves that she has broad and diverse skills, making her an asset to our organization.

Life as a Civilian

Although Maronica misses the friendships and bonds that one forms with other military families, she’s grateful to have joined a company that supports our military and also acknowledges the spouses of veterans.

She says, “my respect and admiration continues to grow for National Vision because we stand in solidarity supporting the countless men and women fighting for our freedom.”

We are so fortunate to have veteran spouses, like Maronica, as part of our team!
