Summer Marketing Internship at National Vision

Nicole the Summer Marketing Intern My name is Nicole Gilmartin, and I am the summer marketing intern for National Vision Inc. (NVI).

Born and raised in the metro Atlanta area, I have spent the last four years at Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA, earning my degree in International Mass Communication with a minor in Digital Media. During my time at school, I was involved with the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Kappa Delta Sorority and Lambda Pi Eta, the Mass Communication honor society. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy from January  to May 2014.

One important requirement built into my degree is to have an internship for credit where I earn a minimum of 300 hours in two months. While Georgia College gave me a well-rounded education and exposed me to different theories and practices, nothing can compare to actually working for a company outside of the college setting.

After months of searching and networking I became aware of National Vision, Inc. I’ve had poor vision since I was eight years old, so I immediately had a connection to the company. It is clear that NVI strives to make quality eye care accessible and affordable to everyone, because they truly believe that everyone should see their best to live their best.

I am extremely grateful for my internship with NVI. From the people, to the office environment, to my daily tasks, I know this is the best internship experience for me. All of the associates I have met have been incredibly friendly and willing to explain their role within the company and the kind of tasks they do on a daily basis.

I especially like the fact that NVI strives to promote a connected positive environment at their headquarters (the Retail Support Center or “RSC”) and in my opinion, they succeed. Upon walking into the building, there is a bookshelf where the CEO chooses different books that he finds insightful, and these are free to borrow for all associates. There is also a department-sponsored meet-and-greet where each department takes turns hosting breakfast and other associates come and learn about that specific department and the people in it. The layout of the RSC also helps to promote this positive environment because it is very open with everyone being on the same floor.Nicole the Summer Intern during one of her travels

It’s no secret that every intern’s worst nightmare is becoming the primary supplier of coffee and not being able to physically work on different projects. I’ll be the first to tell you that that is not the case at NVI! From day one, I was allowed to create promotional items and began learning how projects and tasks are done in the marketing department.

I’m currently working with the marketing  graphic designer and helping her with a number of projects – from flyers to vouchers to billboards, as well as creating  a marketing campaign for a store and aiding in writing press releases and blogs.

I am so excited to see what the summer holds, and I am grateful to NVI for giving me this wonderful experience and exposure to corporate marketing – both retail and digital!
