Boys & Girls Clubs of America Partnership: We Have Helped Over 4,400 Club Kids

We are proud to announce the results of a successful inaugural year of partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). This year we have provided access to free vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams, and glasses to more than 4,400 kids and teens.

It’s no secret that for many children, being able to see clearly can change their life. Grades can improve, confidence can increase and even social activity can be more positive. At National Vision, we know we can change the course of a child’s future by making sure that they have the vision care they need to achieve their potential and follow their dreams.

Vision Screening at BGCA

The partnership with BGCA has allowed us to continue our mission to make eye care and eyewear more affordable and accessible.

This year we implemented a successful pilot program followed by full implementation, resulting in screenings across 77 Clubs in 26 states. Approximately 98 percent of the kids and teens who participated in eye exams and showed signs of vision impairment needed glasses. This statistic demonstrates that our partnership is meeting a need for vision care among our nation’s youth.

“We believe that the ability to see clearly is absolutely essential in giving children the opportunity to succeed in life. We are honored to provide these important services to members of Boys & Girls Clubs around the country,” said Bob Stein, Chief Philanthropic Development Officer of National Vision Inc., which includes our America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses brand.

He adds, “This partnership has shown us that there is a true need for these services. We are proud to expand this program nationally in order to continue to make a difference in the lives of children around the country.”

Additionally, the partnership has been recognized by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Foundation. The Foundation awarded National Vision with the 2016 Retailer Community Support Award. The ICSC will be donating $5,000 to Boys & Girls Club of America as National Vision’s partnering charity.

About Boys & Girls Clubs of America

For more than 100 years, BGCA has enabled young people most in need to achieve great futures as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Today, more than 4,100 Clubs serve nearly 4 million young people annually through Club membership and community outreach.

Clubs are located in cities, towns, public housing and on Native lands throughout the country. Clubs also serve military families in BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations worldwide. They provide a safe place, caring adult mentors, fun, friendship, and high-impact youth development programs. These programs are provided on a daily basis during critical non-school hours.

Priority programs emphasize academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles. In a Harris Survey of alumni, 54 percent said the Club saved their lives.
